Distant waves and the call of cicadas. Low tide and a man with a machete. The man lifts something from the exposed ocean floor. He hits the thing against a rock – a rhythmic sound – and continues walking. More men and large spears gather near the machete man. A woman in a headscarf squats over a tide pool. She watches children build sandcastles on the shore. She dips her finger into the shallow water. Tiny footprints scatter in the sand. The world is waking up.
